High quality Damp Proof Courses products

Damp proof courses (DPCs) are a form of damp proofing installed in a property to prevent rising damp and the associated problems that it creates. It is usually comprised of long strips of black plastic laid within a mortar joint located approximately 150mm above ground level.

When do you need a Damp Proof Course?

A functioning damp proof course is an essential part of any property in order to prevent moisture from the earth and soil rising up the walls through capillary action (also known as rising damp) and damaging the property as a result. A broken or missing DPC will result in problems such as damp walls on both the internal and external sides of the home, and without treatment to correct this, rising damp problems can deteriorate into destructive wet rot and dry rot issues.

Installing a Damp Proof Course

Generally speaking, physical DPCs are installed in new-build construction, and can be installed in brick, stone and concrete walls. They are also suitable for use as a vertical DPC as well as in typical horizontal DPC applications. We stock a wide range of physical DPC membranes from a variety of manufacturers and brands, with widths from 100mm to 1400mm.

Frequently Asked Questions About Damp Proof Courses

A damp proof course (DPC) is a barrier installed within the structure of a building to prevent moisture from rising through walls or floors via capillary action. It helps protect the building against dampness, mould growth, and structural damage caused by water ingress.

A damp proof course works by creating a physical barrier that blocks the upward movement of moisture from the ground into the building’s structure. It can be made from various materials, such as bitumen, plastic, or metal, and is typically installed horizontally at the base of walls or vertically in masonry joints.

Damp proof courses are effective for preventing rising dampness caused by capillary action in walls or floors. However, they may not address other sources of dampness, such as penetrating dampness from leaks or condensation-related dampness. Additional measures may be necessary to address these issues effectively.

Signs that your building may require a damp proof course include damp or mouldy walls, peeling paint or wallpaper, musty odours, salt deposits on walls, or visible signs of rising dampness. Consulting with a building surveyor or damp proofing specialist can help assess the extent of dampness and determine the appropriate damp proofing measures needed.

Damp proof courses are used in new construction or renovation projects to prevent rising dampness in buildings with masonry walls, concrete slabs, or brickwork foundations. They are essential for maintaining the integrity and longevity of the building by preventing moisture-related problems.
